We're getting married. But we wanted to do more than that. A wedding is a once in a lifetime event, an opporutnity to get people together to celebrate the couple, and the things they value in the world. We wanted to use that opportunity to make the world a better place.
"Let's buy a piece of land that needs a forest, and have everybody come out and help. That will be the wedding."
It's a wedding, and a work-party. The goal is to bring those we love together, build and strengthen community, and establish new traditions. We believe that humans can be a positive force in the world.
After becoming engaged, we went in search of a piece of land. This search took us all over the West Coast, down roads and up mountains we would not have otherwise.
After much adventure, we ended up with a parcel of land outside of Weaverville, CA, twenty minutes down a rough dirt road.
This land has been subject to human influence from mining, timber, agriculture. It's 20 acres of diverse tree stands, and beautiful views of the Weaverville Basin (yes, the rainbow photo at the top of the page was taken there. It's real).
We want to restore this land and pass it on as a responsibility, rather than an asset.
The Solstices are the only holidays that humans and the planet mark together, so we chose this date to celebrate with you.
Throughout the day there will be land restoration activities, brass bands -- that's how we met -- and speeches [or laughter?], culminating with dancing and stargazing.
Shuttle runs from Weaverville to the land 9am-12pm
12pm— Please plan to arrive by noon for lunch. The couple will coordinate a shuttle from Weaverville to their forest.
1pm— Forest restoration activities
4pm— Refreshments and freshening up
5pm— Ceremony
6pm— Dinner
7pm— Dancing with the bands
Guests not spending the night can take shuttle back to Weaverville
Monday morning there will pancake breakfast on the land, everyone welcome to join.
Weaverville sits at the feet of the Trinity Alps. We have been told -- and not just by locals -- that some of the best hiking in the world is to be found there. The Trinity River is popular for floating and steelhead fishing. And Redwoods National Park is a few hours away.
The closest city is Redding, CA, about 1hr to the east. Redding is on I-5 and has a regional airport serviced by Alaska Airlines.
Due to the limited space for parking, we will provide a shuttle on the big day, Sunday the 21st, from Weaverville to our land. (~20 minutes each way)
Free camping is available on our land or you can find a place to stay in town. Weaverville is a charming gold rush town with several motels, hotels and vacation rentals. We know the family at The 49er Motel. For those looking more upscale/historic, there's the Trinity Hotel.
The town also has art galleries, a bowling alley, a movie theater, and a great grocery store.
sturdy shoes - we're in a forest! high heels not recommend, hiking boots or something similar are great option and will be welcome during both the forest activities and the ceremony
something for light work (we recommend loose pants and cotton shirts)
something for the ceremony (there will be time to change if you wish and changing rooms available). Maybe this is a simple change from t-shirt to button down or pants to summer dress, we recommend light natural fibers like cotton or linen as it may be warm, with layers as it cools.
check back for more details on what to wear!
